map sketches – Beaver Island State Park

Started by outlining all the roads/hikes/bike trails on the island before sketching some icons. This place has a ton of icons all over the existing map and includes a golf course, beach, lake house, marina, canoes, basketball/volleyball courts, and playgrounds so the real challenge is fitting all that crap on the actual map without it looking too busy. The final version of the map will be elevated at an angle so this first flat draft I’m working on is more just for fitting everything on there. I’m also going to be adding a zoomed map of the beach itself because it has the most icons to fit onto it. Here’s what I’ve got so far:

negative spaces will eventually be filled with some sort design/graphic that highlights specific characteristics of each type face (weight of serifs, stroke, etc). Also gonna have to relocate my page numbers so they don’t interfere with the text along the edge of my pages.

Paul Sahre Sketches

I’ve got a couple of sketches and rough designs done, not particularly married to any of them so any feedback would be lovely. I tried to focus most on mixing typefaces and taking a lil bit of inspiration from Paul Sahre’s style, he seems to love shapes and isn’t afraid to move text around.
